Since our establishment in 1993 by Norton Waterman, MD, SOS has distributed over 750 tons of supplies to 70 countries. Donated supplies come from hospitals, clinics, manufacturers, and individuals. Volunteers sort the supplies in our warehouse, and we make those supplies available to medical facilities and relief groups worldwide in three primary ways:
-
HAND-CARRY - For medical relief workers undertaking short-term work abroad, we provide supplies and equipment to be carried as hand luggage. We invite travelers to come to our warehouse and select the items they will use while overseas. We request a fee of $0.20 per pound of supplies (about $5 for an average suitcase full) in addition to a $20 flat fee, with modest surcharges for certain equipment items.
- TRIP PACKS - For those outside the Louisville area, we ship custom packages. Including shipping, we charge $100 for dry supplies up to 40 pounds, and $1 per pound for each additional pound. We ask a surcharge for certain equipment items.
-
SHIPMENT - For groups planning large-scale projects, we offer custom-packed shipments. The initiating organization is responsible for arranging and paying shipping. We welcome representatives to come to our warehouse and select the items they require. We will also pack a shipment based on categories and items requested via correspondence. Our $0.20 per pound fee comes to approximately $100 per pallet.
