Our Mission |
|
|
Supplies Over Seas meets critical healthcare needs in developing countries around the world by redistributing surplus medical supplies and equipment. We partner with hospitals and others to recover and send what would otherwise go to the landfill. Worldwide, each year 10 million children under age 5 die for lack of basic medical care. In the United States each year, our hospitals generate more than 2 million tons of medical waste, much of which is unused medical supplies and usable equipment. |

Meeting Needs Worldwide |

Since 1993 SOS has shipped more than 655 tons of medical surplus to 90 countries.
SOS is a “green” organization, recycling equipment and materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill. |

A team of 20 Louisville physicians, nurses, and other medical volunteers traveled to Manabi Province, Ecuador (Feb. 27 - March 2) to perform surgeries on over 150 children. The team came to SOS for the 500+ pounds of medical supplies they need for their work. The video above captures the essence of their medical mission and the life-changing work the SOS mission supports.

The provincial government formed a partnership with SOS last fall to help meet critical healthcare needs. The first 40-foot container was shipped in December and has just arrived. The Prefecto of the province said that due to the extreme flooding in the region, the shipment of supplies could not have come at a better time. Some of the basic supplies will be used as disaster relief in small villages.

Ghana The Tamale Teaching Hospital serves 1.3 million people in Tamale, a Louisville Sister City. In 2010, SOS and several other Louisville organizations partnered to begin sending urgently needed supplies and equipment to the hospital. Doctors from the University of Louisville also began a training program for Ghanaian doctors, to improve healthcare and encourage them to remain and practice in Tamale.

Honduras This boy’s foot injury was supposed to have the dressing changed daily for it to heal. His mother was changing it only every 3 to 4 days because that was all she could afford. He had received no antibiotics; she simply sprayed an antiseptic on the wound. A Kentucky doctor treated the boy, and his mother was given the medicine and supplies she needed for him. |
